013 Three O'Clock in the Morning
A Second Place, Albert-László Barabási and YOLO culture in the work place
Hi friends,
try this: put on this song (LINK), close your eyes, make sure your neighbours won’t mind. Imagine it is very early in the morning or very late at night and you wear your favorite chic dress/suit and some elegant pair of shoes - and just give it a little dance.
Hope you enjoy your food for thoughts down below.
Miss you,
Bye 👋🏼
Julia

Excerpt “I can’t remember how long it’s been since I had two whole days in front of me with no commitments, no obligations, nothing particular to do. That’s what’s strange.” In “Three O’Clock In The Morning” a father and his teenage son are forced to spend two sleepless nights exploring the city of Marseilles. I personally enjoyed this philosophical exchange between them because it followed a pre-pandemic mindset about time. Gianrico Carofiglio's books have sold more than 5 million copies in Italy and have been translated into 27 languages (LINK)
Article “Several people in their late 20s and early 30s (…) told me that the pandemic had destroyed their faith in the traditional white-collar career path. They had watched their independent-minded peers getting rich by joining start-ups or gambling on cryptocurrencies.” A so called YOLO culture is rising among the millennial workforce (LINK)
Article “The current food system is simply not sustainable, in so many ways,” says Daniel Humm, chef at New York restaurant Eleven Madison Park (one of the best in the world, some people say). As of their reopening, they will go completely meatless 🌱 (LINK)
History 646k followers in less than a week with educational content on Instagram - who would have thought this is possible? Actress Luna Wedler plays Sophie Scholl and takes us with her from May 4th, when she arrived at her university in Munich until her arrest in February. And yes, it is a German adaption of the Israeli original @Evas.stories (LINK)
Podcast Re-discovered It’s Lemon Water on Instagram and the woman behind it, Michelle Siman. In one of her audio interviews she speaks to funghi expert Tonya Papanikolov, Co-Founder of Rainbo. She shares how she built her brand that produces medicinal mushroom tinctures, harvested from the forests of Canada and what it takes to turn your passion into a successful business (LINK podcast episode, LINK IG Account)
Voting You can hand in your say in the selection of the “Publikumspreis” for this year’s Grimme Online Award. I left my vote for Tupkoa Ogette, who is the author of “Exit Racism” and a well-known consultant for anti-racism trainings, which you can also book online here. But check the list, there are lots of noteworthy online formats that contribute to the education of society (LINK)
Exhibition As of minute 07:41 physicist and network scientist Albert-László Barabási guides you through his current exhibition at ZKM Karlsruhe. “By making visible the hidden connections and repeating patterns within nature, society, and culture, the innovative and interdisciplinary field of network science enables the analysis of a wide variety of cultural and social phenomena.” (LINK)
News The list of this year’s Turner Prize nominees consists entirely of art collectives focused on social change - YES! (LINK)
Launch No.1 The European Review of Books went live! (LINK)
Launch No. 2 Over 4000 women have already joined the community of Berlin Boss Babes. Founder Tamara Rose Morales set up a Wiki/Notion page and started an IGTV interview series with inspiring individuals from her squad (LINK website, LINK IGTV)
Award While typing these lines, I was listening to the live stream of the award ceremony of the Alfred-Döblin-Preis 2021, which was initiated by Günter Grass, and is run by the Akademie der Künste and the LCB. Very much enjoyed the readings by finalists Senthuran Varatharajah and Deniz Utlu (he also won with his essay “Ursprung”, congratulations 🎉) (LINK)

📚 BOOKS
I basically inhaled Rachel Cusk’s new book “Second Place”: A woman beyond her midlife crisis is right in the middle of one, falling for a cliché artist that she invites to her family’s summer house.
“I don’t think I realised how many parts of life there were, until each one of them began to release its capacity for badness. I know you’ve always known about such things, and have written about them, even when others didn’t want to hear and found it tiresome to dwell on what was wicked and wrong.”
Thank you, dear team at Uslar & Rai, for offering this publication way before the official release date 🙏🏻
👯♀️ FRIENDS
On a farm in the Uckermark, the team of Kruut constantly develops their product range further. I am amazed by their work, which also contributes to sustain a certain degree of biodiversity in the area and therefore maintains the existence of plants and animal ranges “in the wild”. Their latest addition is an alternative for coffee and it contains “Wegwartenwurzel”, roasted buckwheat, a bit of chaga and dandelion - can highly recommend! ☕️ (LINK)
